Looking after your curls in Winter

The change of seasons is probably every curly's worst nightmare, with winter being the top contender! The dry bitter cold air makes our hair even drier, getting wind swept makes detangling the ultimate challenge and our daily environments (with central heating) can also have an impact on our hair.

Your curls are going to want a little extra TLC during the next few months but don’t worry we have our top tips to keep your curls moisturised this winter!

Top 5 tips to brave your curls this winter!

1. Co-Washing

Curly hair is thirsty for moisture during the winter so you may find shampooing every wash too drying. Your curls will love our creme based co-wash, which uses the mildest, non-foaming cleansing ingredients, and amazing natural oils which together remove build-up and will add moisture back into the hair. Substitute in the Co-Wash, every other wash to add some extra moisture into your routine.

2. Wear a Satin Lined Hat

Who said curls and hats don’t mix? Beanie hats with a smooth satin lining help protect your curls, reduce tangling and keep them frizz-free throughout the Winter. Stay warm, look cute, and keep your curls intact.

3. Deep Conditioning

Deep condition once a week and pop your  shower cap on during the conditioning process to lock in the steam and lift the cuticle so that all the moisture can enter the hair shaft. Rinse the hair with cold water to close the hair cuticles, and enjoy silky smooth and hydrated locks!

4. Sleep on something Silky

Sleeping on a smooth silk pillowcase or using a satin sleep turban (instead of sleeping on a cotton pillowcase) helps to reduce tangles, breakage and frizz. Cotton pillowcases zap the moisture from our curls leaving them feeling dry and frizzy. Silk and satin both absorb significantly less, helping keep your hair better hydrated.

5. Avoid leaving the house with wet hair

I’m sure you have heard as a child “Don’t go out with your hair wet, you’ll catch a cold!” The reason for not leaving the house with wet hair has nothing to do with this old wives tale. As we have mentioned in previous points curly hair is more vulnerable when wet, if the water reaches freezing point it can expand in the hair and cause breakage. A diffuser will be your best friend in Winter. Check out our diffusing techniques and tips here.
